  • 5 Great Tips For Protect Your New Computer

A new computer means more speed, more storage space and a clean slate. But before you hook it up to the Internet and start cranking away, you should make sure everything’s secure. A virus or attack can turn a brand new computer into a machine that puts all your personal information at risk in about 20 minutes, so don’t neglect to make sure you’re protected.

    Turn Off File Sharing

The option to disable file sharing in XP and most operating systems is in with the Tools. In the Folder Options, you’ll need to go to the Advanced Settings and uncheck the box that allows file sharing. For those running Windows XP with the Service Pack 2 (and if you use XP, you should download this security upgrade immediately if you haven’t) you can disable it in the Control Panel, in the settings for the Windows Firewall. It’s listed in Exceptions, under Programs and Services as File and Printer Sharing. Disable that for the best protection.

    Use a Firewall

If you’re running Windows XP with the Service Pack 2, your firewall is turned on automatically. If not, you’ll need to turn it on in the Control Panel. But for the best protection, use a third-party firewall program instead. Along with the firewall that’s built into your router, this provides the best protection from worms and hackers.

    Download a Good HOSTS File

Go to www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm and download their latest HOSTS file. By using this type of file, you’re automatically protected against many threats. The HOSTS file keeps your computer from responding to things like pings from outside your computer. If a virus gets onto your computer, chances are it got in through an opened email attachment or a program that you’ve downloaded. That virus then tries to communicate with the hacker’s computer.

An updated HOSTS file has a list of IP addresses that are known for hacking and malware, and the communication is blocked, protecting your system. You can add IP addresses manually if you choose, but downloading a file like the one above is your best bet against these types of attacks. The files are updated frequently as new threats become apparent, so check back often.

Use Reliable Antivirus and Spyware Programs

New computers often come with trial versions that expire in a month or two. Either subscribe to that program or download one you prefer from a different vendor, and make sure you keep the virus definition files updated. The best programs can be set to update automatically every time something changes, which can be daily. A good antivirus program will keep those malware programs and attachments from infecting your computer. And a good spyware program like Spybot Search & Destroy or any of the top-rated applications will keep companies from tracking your computer’s activities, and slowing down your new system.

    Keep Windows Updated

At minimum, you must be using Windows XP Service Pack 2, which protects against a variety of security problems. But updates are released regularly, and by keeping up with them you keep your system as protected as possible. Turn on the automatic Windows update or do it manually on a regular basis to keep your new system safe.
